From 2004 to 2008, Dan Bishop served as a member of the Mecklenburg County Commission.
Following a six-year absence from politics, he ran against a Libertarian opponent Eric Cable and was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives from a south Charlotte seat for a single term (2015–17).
In November 2016, he won his North Carolina State Senate District 39 seat and succeeded Bob Rucho, who was not seeking reelection. Bishop received 58,739 votes (52.81%) and defeated Democrat Lloyd Scher who received 44,655 (47.19%).
Dan Bishop co-chaired the Select Committee on Judicial Reform and Redistricting served as vice-chair of the Select Committee on Elections, and was a member of several other committees during the 2017–18 legislative session.
He co-sponsored the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, or House Bill 2. It restricted transgender people from using gender-segregated public facilities other than those identified for use by their biological s*x as defined on their birth certificates. Governor Pat McCrory signed the bill into law in 2016 and it also invalidated a local nondiscrimination law passed by the Charlotte City Council as well as prohibited any local government in North Carolina from enacting new protections for gay, lesbian, or transgender people.
The House Bill 2 was later repealed and replaced with new compromise legislation in 2017 and Dan Bishop called it a “betrayal of principle”. He also went on to compare LGBT rights activists to the Taliban.
He contributed $500 toward the establishment of the alt-tech microblogging and social networking service Gab in August 2017. The website has been criticized for its white supremacist and far-right content as well as has been described as a haven for neo-Nazis, racists, white nationalists, antisemites, the alt-right, supporters of Donald Trump, conservatives, right-libertarians, and believers in conspiracy theories such as QAnon.
Following the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting in 2018, Dan Bishop’s contributions to Gab attracted attention and he responded to the criticism by saying that he was being “smeared”. He said, “I don’t use Gab, but if its management allows its users to promote violence, anti-Semitism, and racism on the platform they have misled investors and they will be gone quickly, and rightfully so.”
Dan Bishop became one of 49 House Republicans to vote to repeal the AUMF against Iraq in June 2021.
In 2023, he was one of the 47 Republicans to vote in favor of H.Con.Res. 21 which directed President Joe Biden to remove U.S. troops from Syria within 180 days.
Dan Bishop has frequently attracted attention for statements attacking journalists and once went on to criticize the Raleigh press corps over coverage of the state budget and called them the “jihad media.”
